This piece is titled Big Dead Fish. It is approximately 8 feet tall and 4 feet wide. The bottom piece is half of the collar for a manhole cover that I found in the Phoenix Mountain Preserve. During the periodic clean-up projects that remove old cars and mattresses from the desert, the collar was probably too heavy to carry out but after riding my mountain bike by it for years, I decided it was worth lugging to the car. The idea for the piece came about because Arizona was covered by a warm, shallow ocean some 300 million years ago even though I have no idea if any fish during the Carboniferous era would have looked anything like this. |
