Encroachment, long a fixture in my living room, was sold at silent auction Saturday, October 20, to benefit the Phoenix Public Library Foundation. What they do: "The Foundation was created in 1997 to raise money for Library programs and services.  We support reading programs for children and adults, purchase computers and fund programs that help people learn to use technology, and furnish spaces that make the Library a great place to curl up with a good book."

Phoenix New Times writer Wynter Holden wrote an article about the Herberger show. An excerpt from the article about my piece, Fish in the Weeds, "Daniel Friedman's Fish in the Weeds would be out of place in another drawing show, but here, it blends seamlessly among the numerous three-dimensional sculptures. A melon-sized natural rock is cradled in a tangled web of rebar. Solid tendrils arc away from the rock centerpiece, trailing behind it like the serpentine locks of a metal Medusa." The article also featured a picture of the piece. Hooray for publicity from a writer who knows how to look at and write about art. The article also praised curator Joan Water's skill at putting together the show. "Maybe that's why exhibit curator Joan Waters decided to venture beyond conventional boundaries when choosing works for the "Drawing Energy" show at Herberger Theater Center. The word "drawing" has been reinterpreted to include photography, painting and three-dimensional sculpture, resulting in a highly successful collection that explores the relationship between kinetic energy and mark-making." Behind every great exhibit is a great curator.

Below are two pictures from the Herberger opening and the various hangers on and devotees that showed up. I'm thinking about hiring that kid in the orange ensemble to stand by my work at exhibitions just to draw attention to them. The show will be up until April, so if you're downtown, go up to the second floor and look around.

January 5, 2007-April 1, 2007 "Drawing Energy" show at the Herberger Theater Center Art Gallery, 222 E. Monroe, Phoenix. From the Herberger "An exploration of mark making in two- and three- dimensions. Artwork features the direct expression and spontaneity of drawing in a wide range of mediums." I have two pieces in this show curated by Joan Waters. The reception is on a Friday from 5:30pm-7:30pm so come down and visit. The 5th is an Artlink First Friday downtown and many galleries will be open. Go to the Artlink Website for a list of galleries. Below is the invitation with my sculpture, Fish in the Weeds,  on the front along with a piece by J.A Jurewicz.

August 14- The Contemporary Forum had a studio visit to my backyard, which is my studio. Had a great time, and of course I loved the attention. Much thanks to Phyllis Steckler, Lynn Spencer and Howard Hendler of CF and of course my father who happened to sit next to Howard at a concert and mentioned my name. It's not what you know, it's who your parents know.

March 28th 7-9pm--Opening reception at the Shemer Art Center and Museum. The Air Conditioned show reflects on various aspects of life in Arizona. I'll have three pieces there. Come on by and check them out. Oh, and of course the work of the other artists as well. The Shemer is at 5005 E. Camelback Rd. in Phoenix. Here's a picture of  me at the opening trying to look artist-like. Below that is a picture of good friends the Harners, the Weinholds and of course wife Lisa in the gallery.

Sylvia and Marty who used to work at the Red Dog Gallery are developing a new art gallery called Discover Gallery Scottsdale. It is in the Re/Max Discover office at 4234 N. Craftsman Court, in the Scottsdale Fifth Avenue shopping area and features four of my pieces. The Grand Opening will be March 30th, so maybe we'll see you there. Craftsman Court is parallel and east of Marshall Way for those of you used to going to the Thursday Art Walk in Scottsdale.

Here's something cool. Artlink is having their Ninth Annual Juried Exhibition and I am exhibiting a piece. It open November 28th in the Phoenix City Hall at 200 West Washington. The opening reception is December 2nd , which is the Artlink First Friday from 7pm-10pm.(Wow, three hours. That's a lot of vin de boîte.) The show will be up until December 9th.You can also see the exhibit during the day when the city building is open.

This is me at the Red Dog Gallery in April. Yes, I look schlumpy. I've spent many years perfecting this look. It's a work without progress. I got it by packing up all my sculpture, putting it into the van and taking it downtown. Then unpacked it, set it up and then posed for picture. Voila! Rumpled and schlumpy.

As the sun was going down I had to grab this scene which was across the street from the Red Dog Gallery.
